Jingru (Cyan) Cheng is a transdisciplinary design researcher, whose practice traverses architecture, anthropology and visual art. The wide-ranging themes include, non-canonical histories and socio-spatial models, diverse ways of cultural knowing and being, aesthetic agency, and modes of co-existence and affinity between human and non-human. Her work received commendations by the RIBA President’s Awards for Research from the Royal Institute of British Architects, in 2018 and 2020, respectively. Currently, with the support of Driving the Human, Cyan is working on a documentary-fiction filmmaking project, Ripple, Ripple, Rippling, exploring the marginal everyday.

Cyan’s work has been exhibited at Critical Zones: Observatories for Earthly Politics (2020-21), Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism (2019), Venice Architecture Biennale (2018) and Beijing Design Week (2016 & 2015), and included in the Architectural Association’s permanent collection. Chen Zhan is an architect, anthropologist and independent filmmaker with a deep interest in forging transdisciplinary conversations that contribute to the imagination of the future.

As an architect, Chen worked at the award-winning British design firm Heatherwick Studio on projects across different scales and sectors internationally. In particular, Chen dedicated three years to the realisation of the Maggie’s Cancer Care Centre in Leeds, a timber-framed building with buoyant gardens that creates an environment of healing as a home for everyone affected by cancer. Since completion in 2019, it received many awards in honour of its architectural design and the extraordinary contribution to seeding hope.

Beyond architecture, Chen’s work consists of two parts—one develops a critical analysis of future-making through intersections between design, material culture and consumerism; the other follows a visual anthropological approach that adopts filmmaking as a means of storytelling and knowledge production. Chen’s film practice focuses on the socio-political struggle of the marginalised through the lens of the everyday. Her short documentary Ahmad reveals the true story of a Lebanese asylum seeker who rebuilds his life through cooking and sharing food with Londoners. The film premiered at the London International Documentary Festival (LIDF 2019).
